END THE WAR NOW!!!

Few candidates for local office ever call attention to what are commonly regarded as "national issues" over which the candidates believe they would have little impact.

In fact, however, the wars our nation wages is indeed both a local and state-wide concern as well as national one. Every day these wars are waged, the Commonwealth and its communities take a terrible toll in terms of higher taxes, and unmet needs.

The war that continues to be waged in Iraq has now cost Massachusetts taxpayers more than $8.9 billion dollars, a figure that is rising. Thirty three Massachusetts soldiers have now lost their lives. Two hundred thirty six have been injured. Services in Massachusetts, meanwhile, are being slashed. Our schools are struggling to stay funded.

The conflict in Iraq alone has cost the Town of Agawam now $38.5 million. It has cost the Town of Southwick $12.8 million. It has cost the Towns of Russell and Granville now $2.1 million and $2.2 million respectively. Springfield has been set back $128 million.

For the cost of this conflict to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we could have funded:

Head Start for one year for more than 1 million and one hundred seventy thousand children.

Health insurance for one year for more than 5 million and two hundred ninety thousand children.

Teacher salaries for one year for more than 150,000 new teachers.

Seventy nine thousand five hundred additional housing units state-wide.

The Legislature Can Act!

I will, as a state legislator, pursue, support and vote for a resolution calling upon the President and Congress of the United States to put an immediate end to the war in Iraq and bring all United States forces home from Iraq.

I will, as a state legislator, pursue, support and vote for a resolution employing Section LIII, 603 from Jefferson's Manual to facilitate our filing articles of impeachment against the President of the United States.
